Ancestral Senufo cast bronze face mask (Kpelie) from Côte d'Ivoire West Africa.

Made using the lost wax technique.

Traditionally, the 'Kpelie' is an ancestral mask worn during funeral rites, initiation ceremonies, weddings and births.

The function of the mask is determined by the crest at the top of it's head and the subtle scarification markings it carries.

The female mask will normally have a plug on it's mouth with the male masks having an open mouth and longer protruding jaw.

It is believed that the mask itself embodies the spirit of the dead, hence the name 'Dead Face'

The delicate attributes of this mask is a fine example of the excellent artistry of the Senufos.

This is a male Senufo Mask as is indicative of it's open mouth, long chin and long beard.

It's face is relatively pure in style and easily recognisable as Senufo.

It has a smooth surface set off by a tall crested spear with raised welts.

Beneath that are 2 downward turned ram's horns.

Five raised scarification welts adorn the forehead, followed by pronounced raised eyebrows and stylized bulging slits for eyes.

It's ears are fanned out apendages and then 2 triangule shaped beard (whiskers) to each cheek.

It has single raised tribal scarification markings, each running from the inner eye corner to the cheek. The mouth is slighly open and fish-mouth-like.

Both the jawline and beard have protruding appendages .

I believe this mask to date from the late 1940s or early 1950s.

It might not be of pure bronze but is most likely a mixture of alloys.

It is however very detailed and shows excellent workmanship.

It has a really nice age patina all around which is a good indication of traditional use and age.

The mask can be displayed on a wall or on stand.

Condition is very good.
